Pee Wee's Big Holiday Review

After nearly 30 years without a new Pee Wee movie (I still refuse to acknowledge the existence of “Big Top Pee Wee”) my wish to Giambi was answered.  Last weekend I plopped on the couch to watch the Pee Wee’s Big Holiday.  As a huge fan of the original movie, I was a bit nervous and naturally skeptical,  but after watching a movie that I had hoped would never end, I was thrust

Pee Wee Herman and Joe Maginello

back into the absurd world of Paul Reubens.  “That was silly” is how a friend summed it up, and it is exactly that, silly.  The story is a new one, and not a continuation of Big Adventure, so we find Pee Wee happily living in Fairville not wanting to ever leave.  That is until he meets a mysterious stranger who invites him to a  birthday party in New York City.  The relationship between Pee Wee and the stranger without a doubt makes the entire movie.  Every scene of them together is hilarious.  What fails slightly are the interactions with the random characters Pee Wee meets along the way, some who are reminiscent of characters from Big Adventure (criminals and salesmen for example).  And some who are literally the actors from previous installments; look for cameos from Miss Yvonne and Simone.

All in all Pee Wee’s Big Holiday is a lighthearted, fun, and silly romp for the whole family with enough nostalgia and call backs to make the diehard fan happy, but enough new material to not feel like a rehash.

We talk Pee Wee’s Big Holiday, Daredevil,  and more in this weeks installment of the “Geek Versus Week” podcast.

“Pee Wee’s Big Holiday” is currently available on Netflix.
