We hardly knew you.
Recently on the Geek Versus Week podcast we discussed a viral story that originated from the “Boston Leader” that claimed a Chinese zoo named a baby gorilla “Harambe McHarambeface” after its online poll was hijacked by American trolls. Who wouldn’t want to believe this story is true. For starters, it’s easy to believe an online contest would end with such a formulaic play on the name Harambe. It’s the internet after all. My only surprise was that it wasn’t more profane. Second, and I point I personally hammered on over and over again, look at his little gorilla face!
It’s stories like these that in our heart we want to be true, but the best lies are usually the simplest. This is where I was duped. I’m generally skeptical of most things, particularly things I read about on the internet. But I didn’t think twice about something so simple, and bland, it was the perfect fluff piece. Too perfect. Unfortunately all it took was a simple Snopes check to see this story was a hoax.
However, to celebrate the life and times of the fictional Harambe McHarambe Face, here are some baby gorilla pics.
