According to Variety, Sherlock Holmes actor Jude Law (who’ll soon be seen as the evil Vortigern in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) has been cast in the role of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s iconic Hogwarts Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore. Law will star alongside Eddie Redmayne (who plays Magizoologist Newt Scamander) and Johnny Depp as Dark Wizard (and Dumbledore’s former BFF) Gellert Grindelwald.

Since Fantastic Beasts 2 takes place decades before the events of the first Harry Potter movie and book, Albus Dumbledore isn’t Headmaster just yet. Instead, he’s the school’s Transfiguration professor. The character was played by Richard Harris in the first two films before being replaced by Michael Gambon.

Harris’ son, actor Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Crown, Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows), was one of the actors considered for the Young Dumbledore role (and a clear fan favorite), along with Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong. Here’s what director David Yates had to say about Jude Law’s casting:

“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” Yates said. “I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

Rowling wrote the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its sequel. The new series of films (five are planned in all) centers on the adventures of Newt Scamander, with the sequel seeing the story move “deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and company have to decide on their allegiances.”

What do you think of the casting of Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2?
